The art of chasen-making, once exclusive to Japan, has found new ground across the sea. The 黒竹茶筅 (Kurotake Chasen) is crafted in China, using techniques that originated in Japan and were passed down over generations. While it does not bear the same heritage certification as a Takayama chasen, it represents a critical evolution of craftsmanship, shaped by necessity and history.

2024 marks a crucial turning point in Japan’s bamboo supply. The 100-year bamboo growth cycle has led to an unprecedented shortage of domestically sourced materials, making it difficult for Japan’s 16 remaining chasen-making workshops to meet demand. At the same time, Japanese chasen-making techniques have taken root in China, allowing for continued production and ensuring that the tradition of matcha preparation is not lost due to material constraints.

This black bamboo whisk retains the fundamental principles of chasen craftsmanship—a finely carved structure designed to whisk matcha into a smooth, creamy froth. While not equivalent to a Takayama chasen in longevity or structural integrity, it serves as an accessible alternative, ensuring that the practice of Chadō and the ritual of matcha preparation can continue without interruption.

2024年は、日本の竹の供給における重要な転換期である。100年の竹の成長サイクルにより、国産の材料がかつてないほど不足し、日本に残る16の茶筅製造工房が需要を満たすことが難しくなっている。その一方で、日本の茶筅づくりの技術は中国に根付き、抹茶の伝統が材料の制約によって失われることがないよう、生産が続けられている。

この黒竹の泡立て器は、抹茶を滑らかでクリーミーな泡に泡立てるために設計された繊細な彫りの構造という、茶筅職人の技の基本原理を受け継いでいる。高山の茶筅の寿命や構造的完全性には及ばないが、茶道の修行や抹茶を点てる儀式を中断することなく続けられるよう、身近な代替品として役立っている。
