The Art of Duality: Weaving and Glass, Tradition and Transformation

This one-of-a-kind glass plate embodies Kyoto’s refined aesthetics and craftsmanship. Created in collaboration with Nishijin-ori artisans, it merges the contrasts of soft textile and rigid glass, tradition and modernity. Through specialized processing, discarded fragments of Nishijin-ori fabric—once woven for Kyoto’s opulent obi sashes—are encased in transparent glass, ensuring that no two pieces are ever identical.

This classical motif features multiple horizontal bands—blue, brown, and green—each adorned with unique patterns in a textile-like composition. The layering creates depth and rhythm, evoking the structure of traditional woven sashes.

The upper section includes decorative mythical creatures, while the center presents a floral medallion embraced by karakusa (arabesque). This combination suggests themes of prosperity, protection, and harmony. Rooted in East Asian design tradition yet enriched by multicultural elements, this pattern conveys timeless sophistication and ornamental depth.

Rooted in upcycling and sustainability, this piece aligns with SDGs principles by repurposing exquisite fabrics that would otherwise go to waste. By preserving Kyoto’s textile heritage in a new form, it celebrates imperfection and honors the artisans who have upheld this tradition for centuries.

To protect the fabric’s beauty, a UV-resistant glass treatment prevents fading and deterioration over time. More than an object, this plate is a fusion of heritage and sustainability, where tradition is reimagined and imperfection is transformed into timeless elegance.

二元性の芸術： 織物とガラス、伝統と変容

京都の洗練された美意識とクラフツマンシップを体現する唯一無二のガラスプレート。西陣織の職人とのコラボレーションにより、柔らかな織物と硬質なガラス、伝統と現代のコントラストを融合させた。かつて京都の豪華な帯のために織られた西陣織の反物を、特殊な加工を施すことで透明なガラスに封じ込め、同じものは二つとない。

複数の帯状の層に異なる文様を配した、帯地風の構成をもつ意匠である。ブルー・茶・緑といった落ち着いた色調が層ごとに使い分けられ、視覚的な奥行きとリズムを生んでいる。

上段には瑞獣風の装飾が配され、中段には唐草に囲まれた華文が展開されることで、吉祥・繁栄・守護といった意味合いが複合的に表現されている。東アジアの古典文様を基調としつつ、多文化的な装飾性を感じさせる、重厚で品格ある横段構成の文様である。

アップサイクルとサステイナビリティに根ざしたこの作品は、本来であれば廃棄されるはずの素晴らしい生地を再利用することで、SDGsの原則に沿ったものとなっている。京都の織物遺産を新しい形で保存することで、不完全さを称え、何世紀にもわたってこの伝統を守ってきた職人に敬意を表している。

織物の美しさを保護するため、紫外線に強いガラス加工が施され、色あせや経年劣化を防いでいる。このプレートは単なるオブジェではなく、伝統とサステイナビリティの融合であり、伝統が再構築され、不完全さが時代を超えたエレガンスへと変貌を遂げる。
